If you know anything about music at all, you’ll know that the standard Chromatic scale is made up of 12 notes or tones – each note unique and with its own flavour when in harmony. You probably also know that these very notes are the basis for every chord and melody in most Western music – and that they can be represented by numbers (or ‘frequency’). You might even know that these very notes (all 12 of ‘em!) are usually spread smoothly in nice logarithmic steps from 1 to 2 (an octave). In other words, a pitch played an octave higher is twice as high in pitch as the original, and all 12 notes are spaced evenly inside this octave…
